Stevens Arms was an American firearms manufacturer founded by Joshua Stevens in 1864. The company introduced the .22 Long Rifle round and made a number of rifle, shotgun, and target pistol designs before being bought by Savage Arms in 1920. After 1920, Stevens made training rifles and machineguns for the US Military. Savage still uses the Stevens brand today for a number of its low cost rifles and shotguns.

J Stevens Arms & Tool Company 12 gauge?

I have an old 12 gauge single shot shotgun made by J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company with “Electro Steel choke bored” stamped on the barrel. The serial number is 00865. I can find info on the company but nothing on the guns they produced. They were located in Chicope Falls, Mass. Can you help me find how old this gun is? Thanks.

I also own the same shotgun with same markings, mine is stamped 0534, The most I can find out is
in 1929 the company produced

single
shot with open breach shotguns just that one year.
I picked mine up at a closing country farm and supply store that also carried firearms. This shotgun in question was buried in the back room for some time. I have since restored it completely. And has one hell of a kick to it. The going price depending on the condition of the weapon can range from $50. to $250. if it’s in outstanding shape.
I hope that helps.

what is the value of a j.stevens arms & tool co. 12 gauge shot gun single barrell z 1 362 maybe 7 behind trigger

does your J Stevens have a thumb break or pull the trigger brake. I have one with what i thought was OD 714 number on the barrel and trigger gurad. wonder now if its 00714

Mine has OC 801

i have the same gun but its a 16 gauge single shot its so old it does not even have a trigger gard. its kick is so powerful its like a 12 gauge with a full medal jacket or FMJ shell.

Stevens made takedown, break-open single shot shotguns, generally with visible hammers from the 1890’s till 1990.

Value will generally range from $50 to $200 depending on condition with small bore (larger gauge numbers) being worth more. 12 gauge are the least valuable.

There is essentially no collectors interest, these were, and continue to be farm and utility truck guns, used for dispatching the occasional snake, rat, etc.

The most common version you will see in Stevens is the model 94 made in endless sub-models from 1926 to 1990. It’s a takedown, visible hammer, auto ejector in 12, 16, 20, 29 and 410. Barrel length can range from 26 to 36 inches.

You can begin to date your gun based on the way the Stevens company name is written:

J. Stevens and Company 1867-1886.

J Stevens A&T Co. or
J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company, 1886-1915.

– no guns produced 1915-1920

J. Stevens Arms Company 1920-c.1940.

Stevens c.1940-1991. AND 1999+

if both the Stevens AND Savage names appear, post 1948.

After 1948, all Stevens and Savage guns carried a date code stamped onto the gun. The date code stamp is a circle or oval containing a letter and a number. The letter coorespondes to the year of manufacture using the following translation. A is 1949. B is 1950 and so on through X. This code can be found almost anywhere on the gun and sometimes requires removing the stock to find it.

So, to the poster above, if the “OC” is circled, it’s a `962 gun.

To the poster above whos gun lacks a trigger guard, it wasn’t BUILT that way, and trigger guards are available as a part from Bob’s Gun Shop. Just google it.

I’ve the same gun. It has a trigger break, with 32in barrel. Found it in an antique store, where they sold it to me as a wall ornament, because they thought it was broken or welded shut (no weld bead, no weld). A dealer in florida’s panhandle said this madel was probably mfg’d between 1893 and 1919. As yet I’ve found no evidence to back his claim. Number on this one looks to be WG573.

would you know anything about a stevens gun. M925.

Rick you seam to know a lot about the j steven shot guns maybe you can answer this does all the old shot guns single shots open by pulling the trigger with the hammer closed? william

Ill give a yes it does. Even though they dont value these very high, id have to think there old enough and have that oddity of finger break, the price should climb someday.

have same make of gun,my great,g,g grandfather traded
for in 1885/1886 food for gun, in 1901 my great, great,
grandfather kept it because it was his fathers first
gun. my grandfather born 1923 used it from the time i
can remember 1970+. he shot skunks, coyotes,
etc. in kansas, kept it because it was his first gun.
father used it also but hated the kick, pumps etc. came into play. i’ve had since the death of my g father
in 1988. shoot ounce a year still kicks so hard that
it leaves the metal stevens emblem and screw faces on
you shoulder. takes 3-3.5 shells assume that its chamber bore is worn out. i just shoot game loads. not for sale never will be for sale. worth? 100-200 dollars mine very old but cant wait to pass down,
jr. will have a big suprise.

If you have a Stevens single shot shotgun, you can crudely date it from the company name.

  • J. Stevens and Company 1867-1886.
  • J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company, 1886-1915.
  • – no guns produced 1915-1920
  • J. Stevens Arms Company 1920-c.1940.
  • Stevens c.1940-1991. AND 1999+
  • if both the Stevens AND Savage names appear, post 1948.
  • Savage closed the Chicopee Ma plant in 1960, so guns listing Chicopee must be pre-1960.

Beyond that, you need to give us every word on the gun to identify it. Every mark.

would you know anything about a stevens gun. M925.

Stevens didn’t make a gun with a model number of m925 or 925. What kind of gun is it? Please describe it.

william wrote:

No, some of them have barrel locks on top of the tang above the safety. for example: this 94E:

then, there is the 940, which has the break lever on the right hand side of the receiver:

Hello, My father has a 12 ga. single shot with a 30 inch barrel. The right side says “Trademark Stevens, J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Chicopee Falls, Mass. US, Reg US Pat Off. & FTN”. On the left side it says “Nitro Special”. Then on the top of the barrel it says “Electro Steel Coke Bored Patened Aug 12,1913”.

I was hoping the “Nitro Special” could help with the model or manufacture date (other than 1886-1915).

I was not able to find any other markings.

If anyone knows of any websites that might provide any other history on the gun, please list those as well.

My great-grandfather used this gun to go wolf hunting (along with his hounds). We have his wolf hunting association membership card.

Thank you very much for any help.

I have a 12 Gage single shot J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. that is stamped “Nitro Special” on the left side, barrel is stamped “Choke Bored”. There are no visible serial numbers. Any ideas?

I was not able to find any other markings.

Nitro Special is not a model, it’s just a marking distinguishing it from a black powder gun much like the “White powder wonder” guns are.

Now, obviously, if it says patented aug 12 1913, then it can’t be PRE 1913, and we know that the use of “J Stevens arms and tool co.” stops in 1915, so you have a Stevens “94” style shotgun from 1913 to 1915.

Stevens manufactured a LOT of single barrel, breakopen, single-shot shotguns. They were produced chambered for various gauges with various-lenth barrels and chokes. They are all very similar in appearance and were cheap utility-grade weapons. There is little or no collector interest in them at this time and their values are similar.”

A (probably incomplete) list of models includes: 110, 102, 104, 105, 106, 1p07, 108, 110, 120, 125, 140, 160, 165, 170, 180, 89, 90, 93, 94, 94A, 94C, 95, 959, 97, 970.

Target pistols [ edit | edit source ]

Joshua Stevens produced three lines of single-shot tip-up target pistols named after contemporary gunmen. [15]

  • Stevens-Conlin No. 28 – named for James Conlin, owner of a Broadway Avenue shooting gallery in New York City.
  • Stevens-Lord No. 36 – named for Frank Lord, a prominent target shooter. Six hundred were produced from 1880 to 1886. [15]
  • Stevens-Gould No. 37 – named for Arthur Corbin Gould, a firearms expert and writer.

Two well known examples of the Stevens-Lord No. 36 were custom ordered by Buffalo Bill, serial no. 29 for himself and serial no. 32 as a gift for Ben Thompson. The deluxe set of pistols had ten-inch barrels chambered for .32 Colt, iridescent mother-of-pearl grips, and custom engraving with gold inlay by Louis Daniel Nimschke. The one given to Thompson included “From Buffalo Bill to Ben Thompson” on the spine of the grip. [15]

An engraved, gold-plated Stevens-Gould No. 37 was given to sharpshooter Annie Oakley in the 1890s by her husband Frank Butler. The revolver had finely engraved dog and horse head motifs on both sides of the frame. The Stevens-Gould No. 37 was one of three embellished guns cased for Oakley as a presentation group. [16]

Rifles [ edit | edit source ]

Stevens produced a notable number of military arms, the most common being the Stevens Model 416 bolt action rifle in .22LR caliber. The United States Military used the model 416 as a training rifle around the time of the Second World War. There is some debate and speculation regarding the extent to which the United States military made use of these rifles with their roles almost certainly being limited to basic firearm training. The military’s Model 416 was stamped with “U.S. Property” on the rear left of the receiver. Rifles with this stamping have been found with serial numbers around 100,000. Various ordnance markings and proof marks can be found on this military rifle. The 416 had a dramatically over sized bull barrel and a large wooden stock. The heavy barrel design added a great deal of weight which compared unfavorably with larger rifles such as the military’s various .30 caliber offerings. It had adjustable peep sight apertures, a hooded front sight, and a small, removable magazine. [10] [11]

Stevens 511A shotgun.

Other U.S. military offerings by Stevens included two shotgun models in 12 gauge. These were modified versions of the model 520 and 620 shotguns. [12] Some of the other more military firearms produced by Stevens include the Savage Lee Enfield No. 4 rifle [13] and the Thompson submachine gun. During the Second World War, Savage produced the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), as well as .30 in (7.62 mm) and .50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns. [10] [11] [14]

Any ideas?
